I am deeply concerned
Nov. 1st, 2008 01:43 amabout all the ...intellectually challenged shall we say... USians I know/read about who apparently have no idea how one becomes a citizen, what their citizenship qualifications are, and how one's children are naturalized as citizens. And what's really sad is all this information is readily available from reputable government websites that would take any fool five minutes to google. AND NO I DO NOT MEAN FREE FREAKING REPUBLIC!
My own father tried to tell me tonight:
a) Obama was born in Kenya (I eventually gave up and conceded this one so we could move on to the larger concept of what is naturalized citizenship and how one gives it to their children. In return, he conceded children born of US parents even if abroad were naturalized citizens so we could move to his next argument which was...
b) The US parent of said child must live in the US for 8 years after the age of 16 in order to pass said citizenship onto their child.
Now, the sad part there is not only is he just plain wrong as all hell but...
a) I left the US at age 21 (note, that would be five years after the age of 16)
b) I scanned in the kids' US passports to show him and yet
c) HE CONTINUED TO ARGUE THIS CRAP WITH ME!
A friend of mine the other day was talking about how Obama fans had driven her so insane with their idiocy that basically, she was voting for McCain. I didn't get it but once she explained some of the silly and ludicrous comments some of them make, I could see how that could lead one to really dislike Obama. Well, my dad... and the TONS of people I grew up with exactly like him... this my friends is how a born and bred Nebraskan becomes a lefty.
This is as stupid as when people claimed Trig was Bristol's or ragged on Palin for taking her kids on the campaign trail because OMG they should be in school! Good lord! As if there weren't enough legitimate reasons to dislike the woman, yk, like how my husband has more executive experience and foreign policy experience, AND has managed bigger budgets than her and that is NOT hyperbole! GAH!
