breastfeeding blankets
Mar. 4th, 2009 10:15 pmI don't get these things.
I get modesty. I get that some people find even nursing shirts don't provide enough modesty. I get that some people hate nursing clothes (or more specifically don't have access to fashionable and tasteful nursing clothes). What I don't get are these giant tents people wear. And why can't they ever be tasteful? I saw one today with giant multi-sized and multi-coloured polka dots. Srsly wtf. Looks like a circus is going on under your shirt.
Kay and I were watching Bringing Home Baby and some woman was using one that had some weird set up like a curtain rod around her neck. She couldn't even see her baby, and this is a day old infant we're talking about here. What killed me is it was in her own damn house and no one else was there but the camera crew. If the camera crew being there is interfering with you comfortably nursing, perhaps you should not have them there?
This one isn't THAT bad:

But most are some very obvious sore thumb contraption like this:

I don't know why I have such a massively shivery BLYEARGHK reaction to them, but they remind me of that "I am mom, and nothing but mom" mentality for some reason I can't even put my finger on just yet. Plus how I hate drawing attention to myself and to me these just scream HEY LOOK AT ME I'M NURSING MY BREASTS ARE TOTALLY EXPOSED AND IN SOMEONE'S MOUTH RIGHT UNDER THIS CONTRAPTION!
Again, yes, I am all about the modesty (er, when outside my house. In my house, I figure people can deal). As an example, I love this because it enables me to just barely stick the nipple out and feed without anyone even noticing:

I still wish I knew why those nursing blankets give me the damn heebie jeebies. They just do. I told Kay if I ever caught her using one I'd have a fit on her. She giggled hysterically and said in drama voice: "What not to Wear: Nursing Edition!"
No offence to anyone who has used one. I know my heebie jeebie feeling is irrational.
