does anyone know if Mac TV will play videos/tv shows DL'd from a source other than iTunes? I guess I am fantasizing about a maching where I can plug my USB in and transfer all my movies and such to the macTV rather than watch them on the computer.

The Apple TV will only play videos that can play from iTunes, and you have to sync it from a Mac or PC running iTunes.
