if this is nice or makes my blood curdle?
Atlantic Canadians look north to adopt.

I don't think it would bother me as much if not for the whole stealing kids from native communities and residential schools thing from our nation's past.

I know.
I mean. I understand in a community where abortion is just Not Done and there's not the economic resources to have large families and there IS the long standing custom of placing kids for adoption it makes sense but....

There's something fucked up about committing cultural genocide on a people to the point they can no longer sustain themselves successfully economically on a large scale and then handing their babies over to wealthy (compared to them) white Canadians as a solution that just... leaves a foul taste.

On the other hand I have this huge, massive, major. behemoth problem with adoption for economic reasons anyway. Something to me is Fucked UP about "I don't have enough money to care for my baby" being responded to with "let's give it to middle class white people!"

But... I suppose it is good the adoptions are all open and the family's of the more recent ones seem interested in maintaining the arctic culture of their child. It came off kind of... tokenish though, to me anyway?

Seriously. With ya there. I do have concerns though, that there is a .. how can I say it? ... trendiness for white couples to adopt an ethnic baby. On the one hand, there is a need out there for these kids to be taken in by soemone. On the other hand, some families I've read about online seem to pick for the wrong reasons. :-/

This reminds me of a recent commercial that got Emma *very* upset. We get a lot of satellite channels, and I think this was a Thunder Bay one. They showed two boys, brothers, who were in a need of a good home and were ready to be adopted. If a seven year old can see a commercial like that and get upset becuase it smacked of .. oh, I dunno what, puppies from the pound or an auction or something, but she was crying. I caught the commercial myself, and it was horrible. :(

They had a segment like that on the TV news in Nebraska... "Wednesday's Child" or something like that. These were kids needing foster homes but STILL.
