For those who did not notice, I posted about a Christianity article I read and asked my Christian friends (especially since, bizarrely considering my total spiritual Jew self and my lifestyle, I have a good helping of ministers and minister wanna-bes/gonna-bes on my f-list) to comment about it, since I know Jack about the Christian community of late, besides that it seems to be very tied to Republican politics in the US. (See: "What's the Matter with Kansas?")

Thank you all so much for commenting, and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] for alerting me there are other similar minds out there.

I am digesting it all and didn't want anyone to think they were ignored.

Oh but like I am not converting or something; just don't believe. But I do like learning. And it was nice to read after the Cranky Christianity I was raised with.

Another thing to add to the conversation: that monstrosity that is tied to the Republican party is not Christianity, it is the American civil religion--which looks a tad bit like Christianity, uses the same set of scriptures (and a few extras), talks about a guy named Jesus quite a bit (but not the Jesus Christians know) and has hijacked pious believers into a web of confusion.

A long time ago the social conservatives got Christians to baptize the nascent American civil religion, blending the two and causing a huge mess. At this point it is damn near impossible to pry the Christian elements apart from the civil religion parts. From my research into the problem, only a handful of people are even talking about it as a problem. The few people I can get to recognize American civil religion as a religion don't see it as a threat to Christianity.

I'm profoundly interested in a Jewish ex-pat's view on this--and really not interested in converting you, I promise. :D
